A FATHER’S ADVICE
Proverbs is a book of wisdom, but it is also a book of instructions: Follow the instructions, and it will be well with you. Neglect it, and you will suffer on the way. Now, lets dive right into wisdom and get understanding. Like yesterday, read the chapter, and I will give some thoughts at the end.
Learn something new each day.

PROVERBS 4
1 My child, hear the instruction of your father. Attend to me that you may know discernment.
2 I give you good doctrine, so do not forsake my law.
3 I was my father’s son, tender, and the only child of my mother. He taught me, saying, “Let your heart retain my words and keep my commandments, and you will live.”
5 I possess wisdom, and I possess discernment also. Forget it not, and stray not from the words of my mouth.
6 Forsake them not, and they will preserve you. Love them, and they will keep you.
7 Wisdom is a principal matter. When you possess wisdom you gain discernment.
8 They will exalt, promote, and bring you to honor when you embrace them.
9 They will give your head an ornament of grace, and a crown of glory they deliver.
10 Hear me, my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many.
11 I am teaching you the way of wisdom that will lead you in the right path.
12 When you go, your steps will not be hindered. You will run and not stumble.
13 Hold fast my instruction and let it not go; keep it as your life.
14 Don’t enter the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it and pass on; turn away from it.
16 For the sleep of evil doers in their deep sleep is to violently take away, but they stumble and will fall.
17 They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the righteous is a shining light, that shines brighter until that perfect day.
19 The way of the wicked is darkness, and they know not at what they stumble.
20 My son, attend to my words, and stretch your ears to what I am telling you.
21 Let them not depart from your eyes, but keep them in the midst of your heart.
22 They are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence from the issues of this life.
24 Put away from you a froward mouth, and perverse lips, put far from you.
25 Let your eyes look on that which is right, and your eyelids will be pleased.
26 Ponder the path of your feet, that your way may be established.
27 Stretch not your right hand or your left, but remove your foot from evil.
My Thoughts:
Proverbs is a book of wisdom, but it is also a book of instructions: Follow the instructions, and it will be well with you. Neglect it, and you will suffer on the way. First verse: hear the instruction of your father. You listen to your earthly father, now listen to heavenly Father who has wisdom and by wisdom created the heavens and the earth.
If you get wisdom, you will also gain discernment. It’s like getting two for the price of one. He goes on to say; I give you good doctrine, so do not forsake my law. In many churches today, they no longer instruct or correct the people. They no longer want to speak things that may offend their listeners. These leaders have become managers instead of pastors and teachers who give good doctrine to the people. Some even claim that other churches are too strict because of their laws. That is why discernment is needed.
Here are 5 Key Verses To Remember On Good Doctrine
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect”.
- Titus 2:1: “Speak things which are proper for sound doctrine“.
- Acts 2:42: “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers”.
- 1 Timothy 4:16: “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.”
- John 7:16 Jesus said: My doctrine is not mine, but His who have sent me.
Protect your heart above all from the issues of life. The cares of life will come to strangle the word of God in you and leave you helpless or dead on the way. That is why the teacher in Proverbs says, Hold fast my instruction and let it not go; keep it as your life. Attend to my words, and stretch your ears to what I am telling you. Let them not depart from your eyes, but keep them in the midst of your heart. They are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
As you continue to read proverbs, pay close attention to your eyes, your heart, your ears, and your mouth.
