PROVERBS 21

1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD like rivers of water which he stretches to his delight.

2 The way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD ponders the heart.

3 To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

4 A high look, a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked is sin.

5 The thoughts of the diligent will be abundance, but those who are hasty will want.

6 Getting treasures through a lying tongue is vanity, blown away by those who seek death.

7 The robbery of the wicked will destroy them, because they refuse to do judgment.

8 The way of froward man is strange, but the pure in his work is right.

9 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop than with a brawling woman in a spacious house.

10 The soul of the wicked longs for evil against; therefore his neighbor has no favor in his eyes.

11 When scorners are punished, the simple is wiser, and the wise prosper when they receive knowledge.

12 The righteous prosper, but the house of the wicked is overthrown with the wicked in their wickedness.

13 If you stop your ears to the cry of the needy, you also will cry but not be heard.

14 A gift in secret pacifies anger like a reward in the bosom of one in fierce wrath.

15 The joy for the righteous is to do judgment, but for the workers of iniquity is destruction.

16 The man who wanders from the way will not prosper and will remain in the congregation of the dead.

17 Whoever loves pleasure will want, and men that love oil and wine will not be rich.

18 The wicked will be a ransom for the righteous; the transgressor for the upright.

19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with an angry and contentious woman.

20 Desired treasures and oil are in the dwelling of the wise, but the foolish spends it up.

21 Follow righteousness and mercy, and you will find life, righteousness, and honor.

22 The wise scales the city of the mighty, and casts down the strength of their confidence.

23 Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from trouble.

24 Proud and haughty is the scorner; the names made in pride are for wrath.

25 The desires of the slothful are dead because their hands refuse to work.

26 So they long and desire all day long: But the righteous give and spare not.

27 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination, for they bring it with a wicked mind.

28 A false witness will perish, but the man that hears will speak forever.

29 – 30 A wicked man hardens his face, but the right directs his way – in the wisdom, understanding, and in the counsel of the LORD.

30 There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord.

31 The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but safety is from the LORD.

KING of Kings, LORD of Lords

One day every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

– Proverbs

My Thoughts:

Once upon a time there was no king in Israel except the Lord God who reigned over his people. But Israel wanted to be like the gentile nations. And so they rejected God in exchange for a king they could see and praise.

God was sad but because he loved Israel he gave them what they wanted. But not before he warned them. A king will tax you and he will take your sons and send them of to war. Yet they did not care.

The first king failed God and was disobedient so God rejected Saul. Then God looked and searched and find a man after his own heart, whom he loved and anointed. David became the measure by which all kings where measured. And out of his lineage where came the star of  David the Yeshua of Yisrael. It was he who was born of a virgin, in Bethlehem Judah. The King of Israel was rejected and crucified.

But long before his birth Isaiah prophesied: Kings will shut their mouths at him, for that which has not been told them, they will see; and that which they have not heard, they will consider.

For leaders to confess Christ from the podium is a big deal. Jesus said, “If you confess me publicly, I will confess you before my Father also.” So often, the church wants these leaders to act like their pastors. This is because they have not read their Bible to learn from the examples God gave of the good, bad, and ugly kings of Israel.

The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD like rivers of water which he stretches to his delight. But some kings rebel and they do wickedly. They reject the way of the Lord and follow after the ways of their wicked ancestors.
